The first serious art classes I ever took were at the @wattsatelier, where we were taught to hold the charcoal pencil like a brush. I remember thinking I wouldn’t be able to draw any other way. Then I stopped practicing for a few years, and eventually relearned drawing with a writing-style grip.
I recently saw a @schoolismlive video about drawing with that pinch grip and decided to give it a try again. What surprised me was how differently I reacted to making the drawing—the muscle memory of my usual writing grip was gone, and I found myself making different kinds of marks and choices than I habitually would, some that felt like a resurrection of those days at Watts. It’s interesting how a simple change like that can help your brain make new connections (and recall old ones).

I had some time to kill while waiting for a batter

I had some time to kill while waiting for a battery repair at the Pasadena Apple Store, so I sat around the convention center and people-watched. Did these sketches later from what I remembered. There was an HVAC convention happening—It always feels a little weird to go to a venue I associate with a specific event (in this case, LBX) when something else is going on there 😆
